In a ridiculously anti-consumer move, Experian will no longer allow the sale of an Experian credit score to consumers. So that means when you go to myfico.com, or you use my FICO Kit, you will no longer be able to get your Experian score; you will just have access to your two other FICO scores from Equifax and TransUnion.
But wait, it gets even worse my friends. Experian will still continue to provide your Experian FICO score to lenders and other “institutional” clients. So you will continue to be judged on your Experian score when applying for a mortgage or a car loan, it’s just you will have no idea what your score is. Yes, you read that correctly. Experian has decided to send consumers back into the financial dark ages.
Now of course there’s a business angle in this for Experian. They will be more than happy to provide you their own credit score at their website. But as I have explained before, the credit scores that Experian sells are not the same as the FICO scores your lender uses. And the important issue here is that the vast majority of lenders look at your FICO scores, not any other score generated directly by the credit bureaus, to assess your creditworthiness.
So here’s what you now face: When you apply for a mortgage, your lender will check your FICO credit scores-remember the lender can still get the Experian FICO score-and will judge your application based on your Experian FICO score, your Transunion FICO score and your Equifax FICO score. While you will know what your Transunion and Equifax scores are before you apply—for you can still access those scores at myfico.com-you will be 100% in the dark about your Experian FICO score.
In the midst of a cataclysmic financial crisis when consumers are so focused on building security, it is beyond me how Experian in good conscience can decide it is okay to deny consumers information that is crucial to building financial security. To suggest that consumers can simply get their Experian credit score directly from Experian is disingenuous. That score is not the same as the FICO score from Experian that lenders use. It is an apples-to-oranges comparison.
I am not disappointed out of concern for my product, Suze Orman's FICO Kit; it will continue to be available with FICO scores from Equifax and TransUnion. I am disappointed because American consumers are being disrespected. I think we’ve all seen enough of that lately.
